Dark, sensual, and intergalactic. No, I’m not talking about Star Wars. I’m talking about Travis Scott, the freshest face in the rap game.
Travis Scott, the stage name of Jacques Webster, is the newest face of the rap game. Scott’s latest album, Rodeo, was released in September, and some of the singles have been circulating on pop/hip-hop stations and especially over the internet. Scott’s latest album is sure to thrill, with extra synthesizers, space age transitions, and lots of guest artists that make the album a dope listen. Scott, a Kid Cudi disciple, blazes his own path while giving us a taste of the talent he has. The track “Pornography” is reminiscent of the Cudi track “Day N’ Night” taking on a biographical style of a story narrated by none other than T.I. The track begins with narration weaving the story of a man formerly known as Jacques, it’s a hip-hop faerie tale sure to enthrall. Another track, “Antidote” displays Scott’s singing abilities, as well his rapping, although the track never explicitly states what the antidote is, it’s one of the best tracks on the whole album. “Antidote” takes on an ultra-relaxed vibe and features some chilled out instrumentation, including the piano. The track “Nightcrawler” is a dark club hit featuring Swae Lee and Chief Keef. On this track Keef expertly rhymes “curry and spicy garlic” with “girl, you know I’m from the projects”, and if that doesn’t entice you and make you want to listen to the track, I don’t know what will.
Rodeo is both dynamic and cohesive, while the tracks vary slightly they all have the same dark beats mixed with a club vibe. Rodeo is a fantastic album, and Scott is surely carving out his spot in the hip-hop/rap scene. (Konstantina Buhalis)
